Childish Gambino - Camp
Glassnote Records
If you were unaware, Childish Gambino is the hip hop project by actor/comedian/writer, Donald Glover. You might have seen him in his sketch group DerrickComedy or in the movie "Mystery Team", and you should definitely know him from the NBC comedy "Community" in which he stars alongside Joel McHale and Chevy Chase as the eternally youthful, Troy Barnes.
Camp is his second release as Childish Gambino and is a huge improvement over his first album in almost every way. His flow comes across far more confidently and he's able to better use his unique humour lyrically without making Camp a joke album. Glover also brings a fresh perspective in his content, there is no gangster posturing, instead stories told from someone with a minority background whose life was relatively normal- an experience shared by a great many Americans whose stories haven't been shared or glorified because they aren't violent, thus marketable.
This album will likely be adored by white hipsters and that's okay, but it should also appeal to anyone looking for something refreshing in the hip hop scene.
